In light of the controversy that ensued regarding Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth) board member Risa Hontiveros TV ad or infomercial, former Sen. Ernesto Herrera of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) claims that a TV ad, particularly the one with Ms. Hontiveros, cost at least P442,000 plus value-added tax every time it is aired for 30 seconds.

In light of this, TV ads of several personalities and politicians air all throughout the day in almost all major networks everyday. Translating to millions of pesos spent everyday. Where do they get the funds for this?

Risa Hontiveros took her oath of office as PhilHealth board member only last June 30 and is considered as one of the Liberal Party’s senatorial candidates next year.

Former Sen. Herrera said the money spent by Philhealth for the TV ads would have been better spent to help upgrade the health insurance benefits of its members, especially minimum wage workers and salaried employees. He also scored that the Aquinos family doctor was also appointed as a member of the board of directors.
