GMA News just issued a statement on the Vhong Navarro story, and this may have been prompted by the public outrage against GMA of which the hashtag #GMAPhilippinesWorstNetwork became the top trending topic. GMA News said that the accused Deniece Cornejo, is not related to GMA Network CEO Atty. Felipe Gozon. They also clarified that they have been fair in reporting about the issue and have sought means to get information from both sides. Here is the statement of GMA on the Vhong Navarro story:

This is to clarify that the complainant involved in the Vhong Navarro incident is not related to GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon.

From the moment GMA News learned of the story, it sought the side of Vhong Navarro. Chito Roño, his manager, gave GMA News a written statement, which was aired yesterday. Today, GMA News aired an interview with Navarro’s lawyer Atty Alma Mallonga. The report about the alleged attempted rape was based on the blotter filed at the Investigative Section of the Southern Police District where Vhong Navarro was taken after the incident. Other news organizations also reported it.

The information that Deniece Cornejo is a granddaughter of GMA CEO Atty. Gozon stemmed from the Instagram post of Deniece Cornejo wherein she posted a photo of herself with Atty. Gozon with several others and captioned it: “With lolo felipe gozon ceo of GMA 7 it was so nice to hear that they want me to be one of their princess #letmethinkitover #23rdtourismawardsnight.” Ironically, Deniece Cornejo seems to like GMA’s rival network ABS-CBN judging from her posts.

The Taguig City Police Department denied receiving any official report or blotter report on the mauling incident involving Vhong Navarro. Taguig City Police Chief Senior Superintendent Felix Asis said that it is possible that the group involved in the incident went to a different police station, where they filed the blotter.

“Wala pa po kaming natatanggap na official report. Wala pa rin pong blotter report na nakarating sa amin. Aalamin din po natin kung saang presinto sila lumapit at dun kami magbabase ng imbestigasyon.”
