UPDATE 4 (April 16, 2009, 1PM): Ted Failon’s driver and maid who was instructed by Ted Failon to clean the alleged crime scene and his car, was arrested just today at noon, by the Quezon City Police. Pacifico Apacible, Failon’s alleged driver, and Carlota Morbos, Failon’s maid, refused to comment or show any emotions when arrested. This while a lawyer tried but failed to prevent the arrest. Meanwhile, Pilar Arteche, the sister of the victim, Trina Etong, will make a public announcement right after Wowowee on ABS-CBN. Ted Failon and his daughter are in the New Era Hospital where the victim’s condition has stabilized.
Ted Failon has undergone a paraffin test but the result was negative. Meanwhile, two Senators have expressed Ted Failon’s innocennce in the crime. Sen. Francis Pangilinan, who is Failon’s colleague in DZMM issued this statement: “Sa halos sampung tao nating nakatrabaho si Ted, wala tayong dahilan upang paniwalaan ang mga paratang na lumalabas na may foul play ang insidente [In the 10 years that I worked with Ted, I have no reason to believe allegations that there was foul play.”
Sen. Aquilino Pimentel, Senate Minority Leader, also expressed his sympathy towards Failon as he called for a thorough investigation into the shooting.
“I am for allowing the police unhampered investigation into the case of Ted Failon. We can only sympathize with him. He’s a friend of mine, a personal friend of mine.†Pimentel also criticized the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO), saying it should not meddle in the investigation.
Yesterday, Vice President Noli De Castro, Ted Failon’s neighbor, was also seen in Ted Failon’s house immediately after the Ted Failon wife shooting news came out. Ted Failon was named by former President Joseph Estrada days ago as one of the names the opposition is considering to be included in their Senatorial lineup in the 2010 Elections.
Breaking News ( April 15, 2009, 5 PM): TV Patrol World news anchor and veteran broadcast journalist Ted Failon’s wife was shot in the head by still unidentified suspects inside their house in Tierra Pura in Tandang Sora, Quezon City today. Trinidad Arteche Etong, 44, was declared brain-dead by physicians at the New Era Hospital after sustaining a bullet wound in her right temple.The slug went through the side of her head, according to police reports.
ABS-CBN, Ted Failon’s home network issued this official statement to the media: “We appeal to everyone to please respect the privacy of Mr.Ted Failon and his family. His wife is fighting for her life.” This is after reports came out that the couple were involved in a “shooting incident.” Apparently the statement was made before the latest report that Ms. Thelma Etong is now brain-dead. Ted Failon’s real name is Mario Teodoro Failon Etong.
Rumors then spread like wildfire through the net and text messages that Mr. Ted Failon had something to do with the incident. As of presstime, TV Patrol World is now broadcasting on air with nary a word about the Ted Failon and his wife shooting incident. Meanwhile, it’s rival early evening news program, 24 Oras, featured the incident prominently albeit with still sketchy details.
UPDATE 2: TV Patrol World eventually covered the story and gave important details which basically shows that Ted Failon’s wife committed suicide, based on the letter found in their household. The Quezon City SOCO Police meanwhile said they are not yet ruling the shooting of the wife of television news anchor Ted Failon as a suicide despite the discovery of an apparent suicide note because of “inconsistencies in the statements†of Ted Failon.
Also, Ted Failon reportedly told police that the alleged suicide note was received by him last night when his wife left with her sister. They also noticed that although the entry wound was on Mrs. Failon’s left temple, the .380 caliber pistol she was shot with was on her right side. Police also observed that there are no bullet markings where a slug could have ricocheted in the bathroom, the alleged scene of the incident.
Ted Failon on his part issued this statement:
“Hindi ko na tinapos and aking programa sa dzMM kaninang umaga matapos kong makausap and aking asawa sa telepono. Kaya umuwi ako kaagad at natagpuan kong nakakandado ang pinto ng banyo. Pinabuksan ko ang pinto at natagpuan ko and aking asawa na duguan kung kaya’t itinakbo ko sya kaagad sa ospital [I did not finish my program at dzMM this morning after I spoke to my wife. So I went home immediately and found the door of the bathroom locked. I had the door opened and I found my wife bloody which is why I rushed her immediately to the hospital.â€
The police are also suspicious why the said incident was not reported immediately. They also said that upon reaching Failon’s house, they discovered that the scene of the incident had already been cleaned by the househelp, which he said could constitute a violation of Presidential Decree 1829, or obstruction of justice. The househelp, Glen and Frida, claimed no one had ordered them to clean the site.
Witnesses in the New Era Hospital saw Failon leaving the hospital emergency room around 1 p.m. in a bloodied polo shirt and wearing a surgical mask to avoid identification by policemen and reporters posted outside. He then left on a blue Pajero with plate number NPE-293.
The gardener of a neighbor of Failon’s said that before noon, he saw the broadcaster in a bloodied shirt as he was about to board the Pajero in his garage with another woman crying. But he did not see Failon’s wife.
UPDATE 3: Ted Failon has undergone a paraffin test, an archaic way to determine if a person has fired a gun recently. Ted is also set to be arrested anytime soon for Obstruction of Justice because of the cleanup of the alleged crime scene before the police could even get to the scene of the crime.

The contents of the suicide note shown and read on TV just this evening on GMA raise doubts about its authenticity. The words "po" were used at least 3 times in the letter. Why would a wife address her husband with "po?" And would the wife of Ted Failon write a letter like that?
this is very suspicious indeed! the suicide note looks like it was written by force :O and for a man who's been discussing laws most of his life should know NEVER to touch a 'crime' scene!

They should get samples of the handwriting of everyone in the Etong household. They should also conduct a paraffin test on the wife soon to see if she really fired a gun.

Obviously, may foul play ito. Almost all of Ted failon's life ay broadcaster sya. Marami na syang naireport tungkol sa mga ganitong klaseng insidente na kinasasangkutan nya ngaun. So isipin nyo nga, is it even logical para sa isang katulad nya na linisin, galawin at alisin ang mga ibedensyang pwedeng mag-link sa tamang suspect? Siguro naman hindi tayo magta-tanga tangahan diba?

Somebody should investigate if Mrs Failon was left handed. It is quite impossible for a right handed person to shoot him or herself on the left temple.
Also, check also the alleged call of Ted to his wife in the morning.

Lahat ng mga marks or evidence ay patungkol sa knya (Ted Failon) 1) the suspicious letter, 3 times gnmit ang "po" at mggwa bang sumulat ng ganun ang misis ng isang batikang mamahayag, Mmm I don't think so,, 2) as far as i know if you are entering media & broadcasting you should know or not really all know the laws, bkit nagawang linisin ng mga maids ang incident place na kung san eh hindi pa natatapos ang imbestigasyon o pinaalam sa mga pulis unless kung may nagsabi sa knila, hindi ba nila alam na pati cla eh damay or should i say supect. 3) may nakakita pla kay ted failon na may kasamang ibang babae na kung saan ito'y umiiyak sa may garahe nila at nakita di umano'y may dugo sa damit ni ted hindi ba nakakaduda yun..

This is really a very shocking story! Me and my husband are still not convinced with the letter of ted 's wife. I think he really shot his wife, maybe there's a second party. I think Ted wrote the letter himself. Cleaning the bathroom and the car, cheez…why would you think of doing those when you see your lovedone bloody in the bathroom. Parang so stupid naman noh! BUt i think they should also investigate their child, He/she is also old enough to do such things…you know! The truth must be revealed, and justice should be given to his wife…May God bless her!

For someone as knowledgeable in law and crime, Ted Failon will get out of this mess he created. Damage control mode kaagad ang mga taga ABS CBN, bigwig tulad ni De Castro sulpot kaagad. Failon was good in covering up his misdeed. ABS CBN is mired in one fiasco after another (Pacquiao-Castilejo mess). Nang makita ko ang "suicide note" parang di ako makapaniwala sa mga sumusunod: 1) ang paggamit ng "PO" ay hindi mo kailanman sasabihin sa iyong minamahal lalo na't asawa mo, ang "PO" ay malayo sa "Pa" o "Papa" ; 2) ang handwriting o kung paano magsulat ang isang tao ay parang grade 1 yata ang nagsulat;
Patungkol naman sa pagkakasuicide ng asawa ni Ted Failon ay napuna ko ang mga sumusunod:
3) kadalasan kung nagsusuicide ang isang tao na gamit ang baril dapat patumba (ng patagilid, ng paharap o nakasalampak na crumple ang kanyang katawan) ang kanyang hitsura pagkatapos magsuicde niya, malakas ang impact ng baril for sure iyon at hindi nakaupo na akala mo nagrerelax lamang, 4) sabi ni ted dinala niya kaagad ang asawa sa ospital… bakit 'di siya tumawag sa ospital o tumawag man lang ng ambulansya? tandaan natin isa siyang batikang mamamahayag…. alam niya ang mga SOP ng ganyang incident… 5) bakit naman kaagad nilisan ng mga katulong ang "crime scene"? May nag-utos ba? 6) at higit sa lahat ang "RESPECT PRIVACY"… ano ba iyan ordinaryong namatayan lang dahil sa sakit? tsk tsk tsk tsk… nakapagtatakala lang ang turn of events… siguro baka may balik lang…
If Ted is negative for powder burns…..one of the household could have done it…..the most that strikes us is probably the 12 year old child. It is evry interesting to find out why….?

we shud let the police do their job, we are not in the ryt position to speculate and most of all to accused ted failon, we shud wait and see and time will come; the truth will come out, for the mean time, we shud pray for his wife's fast recovery, that is the ryt thing to do. we shud respect their privacy give ted failon the benefit of the doubt.
i dont think mr. ted shot his wife, if he intentionally shot his wife, she should be dead by now. about the issue of cleaning up the scene, i dont think that their intention was to hide the evidence but maybe "just maybe" mr. ted himself never thought that there was a crime in the first place. i can see that mr. ted's reaction through the whole event was normal, nothing suspicious at all. however, let us wait for the SOCO's result.

i think the incident with ted and his wife is very shocking to all of us….but i guess we should patiently wait for the result of the investigation before giving our speculations and arriving into different conclusions…let the investigators do their job…
Let us give ted the benefit of the doubt…the best thing we could do is to offer prayers for the recovery of his wife,strength for their children and hope that the truth behind the shooting will eventually come out…

if the failon family were just a normal family meaning none of its members is from the media… do you think YOU would be interested in knowing what is going on? cases like this which involves a family should be kept private. just because ted failon is known to everyone, everyone should also know every detail he and his family is going through right now. everyone is making this issue a very BIG deal. whether or not ted killed his wife or his wife committed suicide, it's still just a case that can happen to any other family out there. So, much like all the other people out there… the failon family has the right to privacy.
do you think a person like Ted should not have known better that cleaning everything would obviously implicate him as a suspect? I don't think so. I believe in his reasons why he asked the maids to clean them. If you had a kid, don't you want to make sure that he/she would not wake up to a very gruesome and trauma -causing scene? remember that the crime scene is the kid's bathroom.

I watched the news last night and it saddens me that our policemen and our Department of Justice can sometimes be so brutal, rude and unlawful. A mistake cannot be corrected by commiting another mistake. Assuming that Ted Failon and his house staffs made lapses in judgment when they cleaned up the area where the crime/suicide happened, then it's not reason enough for our policemen to be extremely ruthless and cruel to the suspects. They still need to follow the due process. And Raul Gonzales, being the DOJ Secretary, should be cautious in his statements. As per the mission statement of DOJ which is to establish and maintain a just and orderly society through an effective, speedy and compassionate administration of justice, I think it is just but right for the DOJ to treat any suspect as innocent until proven guilty – and Ted and his house staffs should not be an exemption to this regardless of him being an oppositionist and a well known critique of the Arroyo government.

Nung tinanong ko sila kung bakit nila ginagamit un kapag sila ay nag-uusap, ang sabi ng mom ko ay para daw maging "natural" na sa amin ung paggalang (paggamit ng po at opo). And we even use the word "kayo" when we address my mom or my dad. For Tagalog-speaking peeps, cguro nakakatawa ung paggamit ng "kayo" if you are talking to a single person di ba? Pero sa amin, as a sign of respect to our parents or the elderly, we use "kayo". Malamang ganun din si Ted at asawang si Trina. The use of "po" is not a strong point to nullify the
validity of the letter. Second point po, may nagsabi din na mukhang pinuwersa si trina sa pagsulat ng suicide note nya. Ang tanong ko po e, sa anong paraan masasabing may nag force sa kanya? Kung sa handwriting ang basehan, siguro hindi na naman sya valid argument. Para po kasi sa akin, ang isang taong nasa suicidal state e disturbed mentally at emotionally.
