I have been crying and felt so proud throughout Michael Christian Martinez performance! It took him a lot to get to where he is now. Her mother had to mortgage their house for her son to get the proper training. No thanks to an almost absent government support. Good thing, Albay Governor Joey Salceda is now making a fundraising event to support Michael Martinez. A new Philippine self-made hero that deserves every Filipinos’ support. Michael Martinez, the Philippines lone athlete at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, qualified for the Finals of the Men’s Short Program in Figure Skating. Michael Christian Martinez, the youngest at 17 years old among the 30 competitors in the men’s short program event, garnered a component score of 31.50, technical score of 33.31 with no deductions, for a total of 64.81 points. Michael Martinez placed 4th in a field of 30. The top 24 advances to the Free form finals on Feb. 14.
After his performance, Michael proudly showed off his jacket with the word “Philippines” printed on it. Michael Martinez is the first Filipino and Southeast Asian ever to compete in the men’s figure skating in any Winter Olympics. He is also the first Filipino to qualify in the Winter Olympics again since 1994, the last time the Philippines sent an athlete.
