Prayers for Cory

The Philippine Icon of Democracy and perhaps the world in the 80’s, former President Corazon Aquino died of colon cancer at 3:18 a.m. August 1, 2009 of cardio respiratory arrest, complications brought about by her colon cancer which spread to her liver already. Former President Cory Aquino was 76 years old. To the younger generation, she is known as mother to popular actress and TV host, Kris Aquino.

His son, incumbent Senator Noynoy Aquino, announced her passing with the following statement: “Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m. August 1, 2009 of cardio respiratory arrest. She would have wanted us to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and our country. Hinihiling po ng aming pamilya ang konting panahon para makasama namin ang aming mahal na ina.” He then ruled out a state funeral for their mother saying the money should be better spent helping the poor than on a lavish state ceremony. To which, I totally disagree, politics aside, former President Aquino deserves such a final accolade and the family’s wishes should take second priority to tradition and protocol.

Asia’s first female president, Former President Corazon Aquino was President of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992. Before her death, she apologized to former President Joseph Estrada for her part in toppling him down from the Presidency. Mrs. Aquino was a vocal critic of the incumbent President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whom she asked to resign, which talk says, they had a shouting match at the Palace. In an unprecedented move, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo started her State Of The Nation Address to Congress with a prayer for former President Aquino’s healing. Various healing masses had been held in different parts of the country after she was confined at the Makati Medical Center starting June 25. The Marcoses, her political archnemesis extended their condolences to the Aquino Family.
